My shoes are torn
they're old and worn
my dress is just the same.
The food is sparse,
the 'extras' scarce,
it's here, it's real, the shame.
I was bereft
for father left
back when I was four.
Merely a child
thrown in the wild,
from then I grew up poor.
Mom always tried
but facts belied,
money there wasn't enough.
Throughout the years
bitterness and tears
life was always rough.
And now my wedding's near,
it's almost here,
a big day it should be.
A house that's bare
I know that you care!
With your help tonight I shall marry!
